Sculpture narrative
I chose the female form and hung her on the wall. She portrays vulnerability.
These sculptures express my culture and history as a South African
The girl with gun has the phrase “ ONS vir Jou Suid Afrika”. The viewer brings their own biases/ views to the work and when you turn the work over and look at her back, there are the words “ Ja almal van ons, die helle blady lot”
I have also taken a famous Boere lietjie SARIE Maria, and incorporated a boere soldier on horseback because the song was written during the Boer war. It is a celebration of my Afrikaans heritage. The sculpture with the flags of the old Transvaal, and Britain and the words “Hello, Darkness, my old Friend, I’ve come to talk with you again” evokes that our dark past needs to revisited.
The image of a stereotype white Afrikaans woman and the Voortrekker Monument in background alludes to how vulnerable the Afrikaaners are in the new South Africa
